Item:132904089691Available for purchase here is a nice old woodblock print of Hokusai’s venerable classic, The Great Wave off Kanagawa. This print was made from recut blocks, published in the early/mid-20th century by Watanabe, with publisher's seal at lower right. Rice paper measures approximately 15 ¼” x 10”; possibly trimmed (although research shows other early editions published by Watanabe with similar margins). Print is unframed. Watanabe's 6-5.5mm seal matches that used from 1947-1957. Interestingly, according to one online source: "These [post-war editions] were often equal and sometimes even superior in quality to those produced in the twenties and thirties even though they were stamped with the [same] circle seal." (More information can be found at the source: http://myjapanesehanga.com/home/articles/watanabe-shozaburo ) Overall condition is good: some yellowing, fading, foxing, slight surface wear, loose rice fibers etc. Also two small abrasions at top edge on reverse where print was once discreetly anchored. Colors still bold. Good bleed-through on reverse. A nice older vintage edition of the classic woodblock print — wonderfully evocative of the original that will look absolutely fantastic once properly framed. PLEASE NOTE: For safety, print will be shipped rolled inside poster-tube. _______Condition:Overall condition is good: some yellowing, fading, foxing, slight surface abrasions, etc. Decent bleed-through on reverse; colors still fairly strong., Type:Woodblock Print, Region of Origin:Japanese, Age:1900-1940, Primary Material:Paper, Maker:Watanabe, Original/Reproduction:Antique Reproduction, Color:Blue
